Overview

Land Survey Technicians play a vital role in the Department of National Defence by collecting, processing, and analyzing geospatial data to support military operations, infrastructure planning, and environmental management. Working within the Geomatics field, these professionals use specialized surveying equipment and software to establish precise measurements of land, buildings, and terrain features on Canadian Forces bases and operational areas. Your work directly supports decision-making for defence infrastructure, facility management, and tactical operations across the country. As a Land Survey Technician, you will perform field surveys using instruments such as GPS receivers, theodolites, and laser scanners to gather accurate positional data. You'll process survey measurements using specialized geomatics software, create detailed maps and technical drawings, and maintain comprehensive documentation of surveying activities. Your responsibilities include conducting quality assurance checks on survey data, assisting in the establishment of survey control networks, and collaborating with engineers, planners, and other technical specialists to ensure survey work meets project requirements and military standards. You will work in a combination of office and field environments. Field work may involve traveling to Canadian Forces installations, training areas, and remote operational locations across Canada and potentially internationally. You must be comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions and be prepared for physically demanding tasks. The role requires attention to detail, technical proficiency, and the ability to follow strict accuracy standards that support the safety and effectiveness of defence operations.

Training

To enter this career, you typically need a high school diploma or equivalent. Post-secondary education in geomatics, surveying, civil engineering technology, or a related field is highly valued and may be required for advancement. Many candidates complete a two or three-year diploma program at a Canadian college in geomatics or surveying technology, which provides hands-on training with survey instruments and industry-standard software. Professional certifications enhance your credentials and career prospects. Pursuing designation as a Canada Lands Surveyor (CLS) technician or registering with Professional Surveyors Canada demonstrates your commitment to professional standards. The Department supports ongoing professional development through access to specialized training in geomatics software, advanced surveying techniques, and emerging technologies such as drone surveying and LiDAR data processing. Within the Public Service, you will have access to formal training programs, mentorship from experienced surveyors, and opportunities to obtain certifications in specialized equipment and software. The Department encourages continuous learning to keep pace with technological advances in the geomatics field. Many employees pursue further education to advance to senior technician or professional surveyor roles.

Entry Plans

Entry into the Land Survey Technician position with the Department of National Defence typically occurs through public service competitions advertised on the Government of Canada jobs website (jobs.gc.ca). These competitions are open to Canadian citizens and may include internal (current public servants) and external (public) components. Students and recent graduates may have opportunities through the Public Service Youth Hiring Initiative or targeted recruitment campaigns aimed at geomatics and surveying graduates. Some positions may be filled through lateral moves from other federal departments or from within DND if you hold a related position. The hiring process generally includes an application review, written assessment, and interview. Candidates should highlight relevant education, technical skills with surveying equipment and software, and experience with field data collection. Security clearance is required for all positions in the Department of National Defence, with the level depending on the specific posting and location. Once hired, you will complete an orientation program and on-the-job training with experienced surveyors to familiarize yourself with DND surveying standards, equipment, and operational procedures.

Part-Time Options

Land Survey Technician positions are primarily available on a full-time, permanent basis due to the ongoing operational and infrastructure needs of the Department of National Defence. However, the Public Service does offer flexible work arrangements where operationally feasible. Part-time opportunities may be limited, as field surveying work requires sustained presence and consistent scheduling to meet project deadlines and coordinate with other military personnel and contractors. However, the Department recognizes the importance of work-life balance and may accommodate flexible scheduling within individual work units. Remote or telework options are available for some aspects of the role, particularly data processing, report writing, and software analysis conducted in office settings. However, field surveying requires your physical presence at Canadian Forces installations and project sites, making fully remote work impractical for this position. Discuss specific flexibility options with your manager and HR representative, as arrangements vary by location and operational requirements.
