Once hired, you will receive on-the-job training specific to DND systems, procedures, and security protocols. This training covers the use of inventory management software, warehouse operations, safety procedures, and department-specific policies. Many Inventory Clerks pursue professional certifications such as the Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM) or courses in logistics and supply chain management to advance their careers. The Public Service offers tuition reimbursement programs for employees seeking relevant professional development, and you will have access to training opportunities to develop your skills in areas such as advanced inventory systems, data analysis, and supervisory capabilities.

Entry Plans

To join the DND civilian workforce as an Inventory Clerk, you can apply through competitions posted on the Public Service Commission (PSC) website and the DND careers portal. Most positions are staffed through open competitions, which are available to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and protected persons. The competition process typically includes an online application, assessment of education and experience, and possibly an interview. The federal government also offers pathway programs for students and recent graduates. The Post-Secondary Recruitment Campaign (PSRC) and Student Work Placement Program (SWPP) provide opportunities to gain experience in supply chain roles while pursuing or completing your education. Additionally, if you are already working in the public service in another role, you may be able to move into an Inventory Clerk position through internal competitions or lateral transfers, which can provide faster entry into the position. DND also maintains staffing pools for certain supply chain positions, allowing qualified candidates to be hired quickly when vacancies arise. Being proactive about checking the government jobs website regularly and understanding the competition process will help you identify opportunities suited to your background and experience.

Part-Time Options

Part-time and flexible work arrangements for Inventory Clerk positions at DND are possible but depend on operational requirements and the specific location. Many positions are full-time; however, some regional supply depots and warehouses may offer part-time or term-based opportunities, particularly during peak operational periods or seasonal fluctuations in inventory demands. Remote work is generally not available for this role, as the position requires a physical presence in the warehouse or supply depot to receive shipments, conduct physical counts, and operate equipment. However, some administrative or record-keeping aspects of the work may occasionally be performed off-site depending on management discretion and operational needs. Flexibility in scheduling is sometimes available for full-time employees, and shift work is common in warehouse environments to ensure continuous operations. If you are interested in part-time or flexible arrangements, it is best to inquire during the application process or with your hiring manager, as options vary by location and operational tempo. DND recognizes the importance of work-life balance and will discuss accommodations with successful candidates where operationally feasible.
