Relevant work experience in network support or IT operations can sometimes substitute for formal education, depending on the specific competition requirements. The Government of Canada values professional development and supports ongoing learning. Entry Plans

The Government of Canada Public Service uses several pathways to recruit Infrastructure Operations Advisors. Most positions are filled through open competitions advertised on the Government of Canada Jobs website (jobs.gc.ca), where you can apply directly. These competitions typically require you to submit an application, complete a written assessment, and participate in an interview. Some competitions are limited to current government employees (internal only), while others are open to all qualified candidates. If you're a recent graduate, look for the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) or the Canadian Graduate Recruitment Program (CGRP), which provide pathways into permanent roles. Current Public Service employees can apply for lateral moves or promotions into this position within their department or across government through advertised competitions. Occasional staffing pools may be created to quickly fill multiple vacancies, and you may be contacted if your profile matches organizational needs. We recommend creating an account on the government jobs portal, setting up job alerts for Infrastructure Operations roles, and regularly checking for new competition announcements.

Part-Time Options

Infrastructure Operations Advisor positions are typically full-time, permanent roles requiring your regular presence to support critical IT infrastructure. However, the Government of Canada recognizes the importance of work-life balance and flexibility. Many DND locations offer hybrid work arrangements where you work partially from home and partially on-site, particularly for non-emergency maintenance and planning activities. The extent of remote work options may vary depending on your specific role and organizational needs, as some infrastructure monitoring and emergency response tasks require on-site presence. Part-time employment in this classification exists but is less common than full-time positions. If part-time work interests you, watch for advertised part-time competitions, as they are posted separately. Flexible work arrangements, such as adjusted start times or compressed work weeks, are often negotiable with your manager within operational requirements. Shift work may be necessary if you're involved in after-hours infrastructure support or emergency response teams. DND encourages you to discuss flexible work options with your hiring manager, as accommodations can often be made while maintaining service delivery. The department also offers leave programs, including parental leave and unpaid leave options, supporting employees at different life stages.
