Government of Canada positions require Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status. Professional development opportunities include pursuing IT Project Management certifications such as the Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM), or Prince2 credentials. DND supports continuous learning and may provide tuition reimbursement or leave for eligible certifications. You should also develop proficiency with project management software, Microsoft Office Suite, and common IT ticketing and collaboration tools. Many positions require basic security clearance, which DND will facilitate.

Entry Plans

You can enter this career path through several federal recruitment routes. The most common entry method is competing in a Public Service Commission (PSC) staffing process advertised on the Government of Canada Job Bank. These competitions are open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents and may be advertised as open to the Public Service, the broader federal public administration, or the general public depending on labour market conditions. The Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) offers summer employment opportunities for students, which can lead to permanent positions upon graduation. Some candidates transition into IT Project Coordinator roles through lateral moves from related IT positions within DND or other federal departments. Recent graduates may also find opportunities through the Federal Internship for Youth in Science and Technology (FIYST) or similar programs. DND occasionally maintains recruitment pools of qualified candidates for rapid deployment when vacancies arise. Networking within the federal IT community and registering with recruitment databases can improve your visibility to hiring managers.

Part-Time Options

IT Project Coordinator positions typically operate on a standard full-time basis to ensure consistent project oversight and team coordination. However, like most federal public service positions, part-time and job-sharing arrangements may be available in some instances, subject to operational requirements and manager approval. Remote and flexible work options have become more common in federal IT roles. Many DND IT Project Coordinator positions now offer hybrid or remote work arrangements, allowing you to work from home for a portion of the week while maintaining collaboration with project teams. The extent of flexibility depends on the specific project requirements and your manager's operational needs. Core hours and participation in meetings may be required to ensure effective coordination and communication with stakeholders across the organization.
