Entry Plans

There are several pathways to join the DND civilian workforce as an IT Planning and Reporting Advisor. The primary route is through public competitions advertised on the Government of Canada Job Bank and DND's careers website. These competitions are open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents and typically require a screening process including application review, written assessments, and interviews. You may also enter through the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Member Employment Transition (MET) program if you are a serving or recently released member of the Canadian Armed Forces. This program provides priority consideration for CAF members transitioning to civilian roles within DND. Experienced IT professionals already working in the federal Public Service may transition into this role through lateral moves or internal competitions. DND also participates in student internship and recruitment programs, including the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) and post-secondary recruitment initiatives, which can lead to permanent employment. Additionally, DND maintains inventory lists and talent pools of qualified candidates from previous competitions, which may be used to fill future vacancies without conducting new competitions.

Part-Time Options

Part-time and flexible work arrangements are available for IT Planning and Reporting Advisor positions, subject to operational requirements and management approval. Many employees in this role work on a full-time basis; however, DND recognizes the value of flexible work arrangements in supporting work-life balance. Remote and hybrid work options have become more common in IT planning and advisory roles, particularly for activities that involve analysis, report writing, and virtual meetings with stakeholders across multiple locations. However, some in-person presence may be required for meetings, training, and collaboration with your immediate team and DND leadership. Specific flexible work arrangements—including part-time schedules, compressed work weeks, and telework options—are negotiated directly with your manager based on the needs of the position, DND's operational requirements, and your individual circumstances. It is recommended to discuss flexibility options during the recruitment process or after joining DND to determine what arrangements are feasible for your role.
