As an Information Management Project Administrator with the Department of National Defence, you will play a vital role in planning, coordinating, and delivering information management projects that support military operations and defence initiatives. You will work with cross-functional teams to ensure that information systems, data governance, and document management projects are executed on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards. This position bridges the gap between information management strategy and practical implementation across the organization.
Your day-to-day responsibilities will include developing project plans, tracking timelines and deliverables, coordinating with stakeholders, managing project documentation, and ensuring compliance with Treasury Board and DND information management policies. You will monitor project progress, identify risks and issues, communicate updates to project teams and leadership, and help resolve obstacles that arise during project execution. You may also support the development of business cases, requirements documentation, and implementation schedules for information management initiatives.
You will work in a professional office environment, primarily at a DND location, though remote and hybrid arrangements may be available depending on operational needs. You will interact regularly with IT specialists, data analysts, project managers, and senior leadership across various defence branches and commands.

Professional certifications are highly valued and may include Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM), or credentials from the Project Management Institute (PMI). Government of Canada certifications in information management, records management, or access to information may also be relevant.
Once hired, you will have access to professional development opportunities through the Treasury Board's Learning and Development programs, DND's internal training initiatives, and external courses in advanced project management, data analysis, and emerging information technologies. Many employees pursue additional certifications while employed with the federal Public Service.
Entry Plans
You can enter this career in the federal Public Service through several pathways. The primary route is competition for specific Information Management Project Administrator positions advertised on the Government of Canada's official job board (jobs.gc.ca). These competitions are open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents and typically require you to submit a detailed application and participate in an assessment process, which may include written exams, interviews, or work samples.
You may also enter through the Public Service Appointment System if you are already employed within the Government of Canada and apply for lateral moves or promotions. Some positions may be filled through student recruitment programs, such as the Co-op Student Program or the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP), allowing you to gain experience before permanent appointment.
If you have relevant experience in project coordination, data management, or administrative roles in other sectors, you may be considered for competitions even without prior federal government experience. Preference may be given to current or former members of the Canadian Armed Forces and to persons with disabilities in accordance with Public Service Commission policies.
Part-Time Options
Part-time and flexible work arrangements are often available for Information Management Project Administrator positions, particularly for those with established performance records or specific personal circumstances. Many DND locations support flexible hours, compressed work weeks, or job-sharing arrangements, provided that operational requirements and project deadlines are met.
Remote and hybrid work options have expanded across the Government of Canada, and many information management projects can be conducted with team members working from home for part of the week. The availability of remote work depends on the specific project, security clearance requirements, and your manager's discretion. During critical project phases or when in-person collaboration is essential, you may be required to work on-site.
Leave provisions, including vacation, sick leave, and family-related leave, follow Treasury Board guidelines and are typically more generous than in the private sector. Term-based positions may also be available for those seeking temporary work or project-specific engagements.
