Entry Plans

You can enter the HR Analyst career in the Public Service through several pathways: Competitive Staffing: DND regularly posts HR Analyst positions through open competitions. These processes typically require you to submit an application, complete written assessments, and participate in interviews. You'll be evaluated on your education, work experience, and demonstrated competencies in areas such as problem-solving, communication, and human resources knowledge. Public Service Job Pools: Some HR Analyst positions are staffed from established Public Service talent pools or inventory lists. If you've competed successfully in a previous federal competition, you may be considered from the pool without recompeting. Student and Early Career Programs: DND participates in federal student programs such as the Co-op Program and the Post-Secondary Recruitment Campaign (PSRC), which can lead to permanent positions upon graduation. Lateral Moves: If you're already employed in the Public Service, you may transfer to an HR Analyst role through internal competitions or lateral appointments, depending on your current classification and experience. Military to Civilian Transition: Canadian Armed Forces members transitioning to civilian employment may have access to priority consideration in hiring processes.

Part-Time Options

Part-time work opportunities are available for HR Analyst positions in DND, though availability varies by location and operational needs. Permanent part-time positions are offered in some cases, typically ranging from 50-80% of full-time hours. Flexible work arrangements, including flexible hours and compressed work weeks, are generally available where operational requirements permit. Many HR Analyst positions can be performed with some degree of flexibility in work scheduling, allowing you to balance work and personal commitments. Remote and hybrid work options have become more common in the Public Service. Depending on the specific role and DND's current policies, you may have the opportunity to work remotely for part of the week or on a fully remote basis, particularly for analytical and administrative tasks. However, some aspects of HR work—such as in-person consultations with employees and managers—may require on-site presence at a DND location. Specific flexible work arrangements should be discussed during the recruitment process and confirmed with the hiring manager.
