Entry Plans
You can enter this career through several pathways within the federal Public Service. The most common route is through a Public Service Commission (PSC) job competition advertised on the Government of Canada's Job Bank website. These competitions are open to Canadian citizens and may be advertised as either open or specified (for current public servants).
If you are already a Canadian Armed Forces member or federal public servant, you may be able to apply for advertised positions or transition into this role through internal mobility processes. Some positions may be filled through staffing pools or priority lists maintained by DND for recurring recruitment needs.
Students and recent graduates may find opportunities through student summer employment programs or entry-level positions that provide a pathway into the Health Care Administrator career. Lateral moves from related administrative positions in other departments or the CAF are also possible. We recommend regularly checking the Job Bank and DND's internal staffing systems for current opportunities that match your qualifications and interests.
Part-Time Options
Part-time and flexible work arrangements are available for Health Care Administrators, depending on the needs of the specific health care facility and collective agreement provisions. Many military clinics and health care units offer part-time positions, particularly in administrative support roles.
Remote work options are limited given that this role requires regular interaction with patients, health care teams, and medical records management systems on-site. However, some administrative tasks may be performed remotely when operationally appropriate. Work schedules may include standard office hours, extended hours, shift work, or weekend coverage depending on the facility. We encourage you to discuss flexible work arrangements during the hiring process and with your manager once employed, as accommodations can often be made to balance operational needs with work-life balance.
