Overview

Geological Engineering Technologists support the design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure projects across the Department of National Defence. You will apply your knowledge of geology, soil mechanics, and engineering principles to assess ground conditions, analyze geological data, and provide technical recommendations for military facilities and operations. Your work ensures that Defence infrastructure is built on solid scientific understanding of the natural environment. In this role, you will conduct geological surveys and investigations, collect and analyze soil and rock samples, prepare technical reports, and collaborate with engineers and project managers. You may work on site investigations for new construction projects, evaluate foundation requirements for buildings and runways, or assess geological hazards. Your responsibilities include using specialized equipment, maintaining accurate field records, and ensuring all work meets Defence and industry standards. You will work in a diverse environment that includes both office-based technical work and field investigations at military installations across Canada. You may travel to project sites for extended periods and work as part of multidisciplinary teams that include engineers, architects, and environmental specialists. The role offers the opportunity to contribute directly to the operational readiness of the Canadian Armed Forces by ensuring Defence infrastructure is safe, sustainable, and built to specification.

Training

You will typically need a diploma or degree in geological engineering technology, geology, civil engineering technology, or a related field from an accredited Canadian institution. Some positions may accept candidates with a high school diploma plus substantial related work experience. Professional certification through associations such as Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) or equivalent provincial bodies is valued and may be required for advancement. Throughout your career, the Department supports continued professional development through training in specialized software, advanced field techniques, and emerging technologies in geological assessment. You may also pursue additional certifications in areas such as environmental assessment, geotechnical engineering, or occupational health and safety.
