As a General Counsel – Legal Advisory Services in the Department of National Defence (DND), you will provide comprehensive legal advice and counsel to senior leadership, program managers, and operational teams across the organization. You will analyze complex legal issues, interpret legislation and regulations, and develop legally sound recommendations that support DND's military operations, acquisitions, human resources, and administrative functions. This role is critical to ensuring the Department operates within the legal framework while effectively accomplishing its Defence mandate.
Your day-to-day responsibilities will include reviewing contracts and agreements, advising on statutory compliance, conducting legal research, preparing legal opinions, and representing the Department in legal proceedings when necessary. You will work collaboratively with internal stakeholders, other government departments, external counsel, and the Department of Justice to resolve legal matters efficiently. You may also contribute to policy development, provide training on legal topics, and support risk management initiatives across the organization.
You will work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment where legal issues directly impact operational readiness and strategic objectives. Training
To succeed in this role, you must be a Canadian citizen and hold a valid law degree from a Canadian law school or equivalent internationally recognized qualification. You must be called to the bar and in good standing with your provincial or territorial law society. Depending on your background, you may need to complete articling or equivalent professional requirements if not already completed.
Continuing legal education is essential in this career. You are expected to maintain your professional standing through ongoing law society membership requirements and participate in professional development relevant to government and military legal practice. DND supports access to training in specialized areas such as military law, procurement law, and administrative law. Many lawyers in this role pursue advanced credentials or certifications in relevant practice areas.
Familiar with the Government of Canada's legal environment is advantageous. Training and orientation in federal legislation, Treasury Board policies, DND-specific directives, and government legal practices will be provided upon appointment. Security clearance training and other mandatory government training will also be required.
