Overview

Estate Managers are responsible for the overall administration and operation of Defence and Military Family Resource Centres (FRCs), officer and non-commissioned member (NCM) mess facilities, and other hospitality venues across Department of National Defence locations. In this role, you will manage day-to-day operations, coordinate with multiple stakeholders, and ensure facilities meet the needs of military personnel and their families. Your work directly contributes to quality of life for our Defence Team members and supports operational readiness by maintaining welcoming, well-organized community spaces. Your responsibilities include overseeing facility maintenance and cleanliness, managing budgets and procurement, coordinating events and programs, supervising support staff, and ensuring compliance with health, safety, and security regulations. You will work closely with civilian and military colleagues, respond to facility issues promptly, and adapt operations based on community feedback and changing needs. Estate Managers work in dynamic, people-focused environments where attention to detail, problem-solving, and strong interpersonal skills are essential. This career offers stability within the federal public service, competitive benefits, and the opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of military-connected communities across Canada.

Training

Most Estate Manager positions require a high school diploma or equivalent as a minimum educational requirement. Many successful candidates hold post-secondary credentials such as diplomas or certificates in hospitality management, facility management, business administration, or related fields. Some positions may prefer or require specific certifications such as Food Safety Handler certification, WHMIS training, or First Aid/CPR depending on facility type and scope. Professional development is supported through Government of Canada training programs and DND-specific orientation. You may pursue certifications in facilities management, event coordination, budget management, or supervisory skills through distance learning or in-person courses. Continuous learning opportunities help you stay current with best practices in hospitality operations, emergency management, and employee engagement.

Entry Plans

You can pursue an Estate Manager position through several entry pathways in the federal public service. The primary method is applying to advertised competitions on the Government of Canada Jobs website (jobs.gc.ca), where positions are posted as they become available at DND locations nationwide. Competitions are open to Canadian citizens and may include written assessments, interviews, and reference checks. If you are already a Government of Canada employee, you may apply to internal competitions that offer priority to current public servants. Lateral moves from related hospitality, administrative, or facility management roles within DND or other departments are common pathways for career advancement. Some positions may be filled through staffing pools or deployment mechanisms for employees seeking geographic relocation. Student or youth programs may also provide entry opportunities for those early in their careers, often including paid on-the-job training. Specific eligibility and selection processes vary by competition and hiring manager preferences.

Part-Time Options

Estate Manager positions are typically full-time, permanent roles given the ongoing operational demands of facilities. However, depending on the specific location and organizational needs, some opportunities for flexible scheduling may be available—particularly in larger centres where operations are split across shifts or where mentoring junior staff allows for adjusted hours. Remote work is generally limited for Estate Managers because the role requires a physical presence to oversee facilities, respond to emergencies, and supervise on-site activities. However, administrative and planning components of the role may occasionally be performed off-site. Part-time or seasonal positions may occasionally be available at certain DND locations, particularly those with variable operational demands. Interested candidates should inquire with specific hiring managers about flexible work arrangements during the application or interview process, as availability depends on local facility needs and organizational priorities.
