Educational Assistants support teachers and students in classroom and school environments across Canadian Armed Forces schools and Defence establishments. They work alongside teachers to enhance the learning experience, manage classroom activities, and provide individualized support to students who need additional help. Educational Assistants play a vital role in creating inclusive, engaging learning environments where all students can succeed.
Your day-to-day responsibilities include assisting with lesson preparation, supervising students during activities and transitions, supporting students with learning difficulties, and helping maintain classroom organization. You may work one-on-one with students, manage small group instruction, or support whole-class activities depending on classroom needs. Educational Assistants also contribute to student safety, behaviour management, and the implementation of inclusive education practices.
You will work in DND schools located on Canadian Armed Forces bases and Defence establishments across Canada. These environments are dynamic, collaborative workplaces where you'll interact with teachers, administrators, parents, and diverse student populations. The role offers the opportunity to make a direct, meaningful impact on student learning and development while supporting the educational mission of Defence schools.

Training
To become an Educational Assistant with the Government of Canada, you typically need a high school diploma or equivalent as a minimum qualification. Many positions prefer or require some post-secondary education in education, child development, or a related field, such as a college diploma or university coursework. Some positions may accept equivalent work experience in educational or support settings.
Certifications that strengthen your candidacy include First Aid/CPR, and any specialized training in areas such as special education, behavioural support, or English as an Additional Language (EAL). Once hired, the Department of National Defence provides on-the-job training specific to DND school operations, policies, and procedures. Professional development opportunities are available through in-service training, workshops on inclusive education practices, and participation in school-wide professional learning initiatives. Employees are encouraged to pursue relevant certifications and upgrading to support career growth within the educational field.
Entry Plans
Educational Assistants typically enter the DND civilian workforce through advertised competitions posted on the Government of Canada's Job Bank and internal DND recruitment channels. Competitions are usually open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents who meet the minimum qualifications.
You may also enter through lateral moves if you're already employed in the federal Public Service and wish to transfer to an educational support role. Student work-study programs and casual/seasonal employment are sometimes available during school years, providing pathway opportunities for students to gain experience and transition into permanent positions.
The hiring process generally includes an application review, assessment of qualifications, and interviews conducted by DND schools or Education Services staff. Competition timing often aligns with school-year cycles, with positions opening in spring or summer. Registering for notifications on Government of Canada job boards and checking with specific DND school locations directly can help you stay informed about upcoming opportunities.
Part-Time Options
Educational Assistant positions are available in both full-time and part-time arrangements depending on school needs and operational requirements. Part-time positions typically work scheduled hours during the school day and school year, offering flexibility for those balancing other commitments.
Many Educational Assistant roles follow the school calendar, with most work occurring during the academic year and reduced or no hours during summer break and statutory holidays. This schedule appeals to individuals seeking work-life balance and predictable hours aligned with student needs.
Remote work is generally not typical for Educational Assistant positions, as the role requires in-person presence in classrooms and school environments to provide direct support to students and teachers. However, some administrative or preparation tasks may be completed off-site as determined by your school's leadership. Discuss flexible scheduling options, including part-time arrangements, during the recruitment and hiring process with your prospective employer.
