As an Editor with the Department of National Defence, you will play a vital role in ensuring clear, accurate, and professional communications across the organization. You will review, revise, and refine written content for grammar, style, clarity, and consistency while maintaining the voice and intent of the original material. Your work supports DND's mission by making complex defence and military information accessible to diverse audiences, including service members, civilians, and the general public. In this role, you will collaborate with subject matter experts, communications professionals, and program teams to produce high-quality publications, reports, web content, and strategic communications. You may specialize in technical editing, copy editing, substantive editing, or style management depending on your assignment. Your responsibilities include fact-checking, verifying citations, ensuring compliance with Government of Canada communications standards, and maintaining editorial style guides. You will work with digital platforms, content management systems, and publishing tools while meeting tight deadlines and managing multiple projects simultaneously. Editors in the DND civilian workforce work in a dynamic environment where attention to detail is essential and the impact of your work directly supports operational effectiveness and public trust. Training

To become an Editor with DND, you typically need a bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Journalism, or a related field. Some positions may accept candidates with significant professional editing experience in lieu of formal education. Professional certifications such as membership with Editors Canada or completion of the Professional Editing Certificate through a recognized institution are valuable assets. Once hired, you will have access to professional development opportunities including training in Government of Canada style guides, ATIP (Access to Information and Privacy) regulations, treasury board communications policies, and specialized editing software. DND supports continuous learning through workshops on emerging communications technologies, plain language writing, digital content management, and accessibility standards (including WCAG compliance). Many editors pursue additional certifications in specialized areas such as technical writing, content strategy, or digital communications. Mentorship programs and peer learning networks are also available to support your professional growth within the organization.

Entry Plans

Entry to the Editor position in the DND civilian workforce typically occurs through competitive recruitment processes managed by the Public Service Commission (PSC). You can monitor opportunities on the Government of Canada's official jobs website (jobs.gc.ca) and DND's careers portal. Most Editor positions are advertised at the EC-04 or EC-05 classification level, depending on experience and complexity. You may enter through several pathways: direct competition for a specific Editor position, inclusion in a recruitment pool that DND or other federal departments can draw from, or lateral transfer if you are already a federal public servant. Some positions may be filled through priority hiring initiatives targeting Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, or other designated groups. Post-secondary students and recent graduates can explore the Federal Student Work Program or the University Recruitment Program, which provide entry-level opportunities and can lead to permanent positions. If you are an experienced editor from outside government, you will typically compete in an open competition. Current federal public servants interested in transitioning to an Editor role may apply as internal candidates and may have priority consideration. Demonstrated editing expertise, a strong portfolio, and familiarity with Government of Canada communications standards will strengthen your application.

Part-Time Options

Part-time and flexible work arrangements are often available for Editor positions at DND, though availability depends on operational needs and the specific work location. Many editing roles can be structured to accommodate compressed work weeks, flextime, or job sharing, particularly if the position does not require real-time collaboration or attendance at frequent in-person meetings. Remote work options have expanded significantly across the federal public service. Many DND Editor positions can be performed remotely or on a hybrid basis, allowing you to work from home for portions of the week while attending the office for team meetings, training, or collaborative projects. The extent of remote work flexibility is determined during the hiring process and may be formalized in your employment agreement. If flexible or part-time work is important to you, these arrangements should be discussed with your hiring manager and your Human Resources Business Partner. DND is committed to supporting work-life balance and accommodation requests in accordance with the Canadian Human Rights Act and Treasury Board policies on flexible work arrangements.
