As a Drywall Applicator with the Department of National Defence, you will be responsible for installing, finishing, and maintaining drywall systems in DND facilities across Canada. You will measure, cut, and install drywall sheets on walls and ceilings, apply joint compound, sand surfaces, and prepare walls for painting or finishing. Your work ensures that DND buildings meet building codes, safety standards, and departmental specifications. Drywall Applicators work on new construction projects, renovations, and maintenance of existing Defence infrastructure.
In this role, you will work as part of construction and maintenance teams on military bases and Defence facilities. You may work indoors in controlled environments or on active job sites where you coordinate with other trades. The position requires attention to detail, physical stamina, and the ability to follow technical specifications. You will use hand and power tools, scaffolding, and lifting equipment to complete projects on schedule and within quality standards.
This is a hands-on trade position that contributes directly to maintaining safe, functional, and professional working environments for Canadian Armed Forces members and Defence civilians across the country.

Training
Entry into this position typically requires completion of secondary school or equivalent. Previous experience in drywall application, construction, or related trades is an asset. Some provinces require provincial certification or trade qualifications for drywall applicators; DND will recognize equivalent credentials from other provinces.
Once hired, you may complete formal apprenticeship programs, manufacturer training, or on-the-job mentoring depending on your experience level and DND's operational needs. Professional development opportunities include advanced finishing techniques, building code updates, safety certifications (such as fall protection and confined space entry), and training on new materials and methods used in Defence construction projects. You will be expected to maintain current knowledge of building standards, occupational health and safety regulations, and DND-specific requirements.
