Dockworkers play a vital role in Canada's maritime operations and defence logistics. As a Dockworker with the Department of National Defence, you will be responsible for loading, unloading, and moving cargo aboard naval vessels and at maritime facilities. You will work as part of a skilled team to ensure the safe and efficient handling of military equipment, supplies, and materials that support Canada's naval operations and defence capabilities.
Your daily responsibilities include operating cargo handling equipment, securing loads, inspecting vessels and cargo for safety compliance, and maintaining accurate documentation of all materials handled. Training
To become a Dockworker with DND, you typically need a high school diploma or equivalent. While formal post-secondary education in maritime operations is not required, relevant experience working in warehousing, logistics, or maritime environments is an asset.
Once hired, you will receive on-the-job training and instruction in cargo handling techniques, safety procedures, vessel operations, and DND-specific protocols. You will work under the supervision of experienced Dockworkers and supervisors as you develop your skills. Depending on your assigned duties, you may be required to obtain or maintain certifications such as:
• Standard First Aid and CPR certification
• Working at Heights certification (if applicable)
• Forklift or heavy equipment operation certifications
• Maritime safety and security clearance credentials
