Entry Plans
You can enter this career in the federal Public Service through several pathways:
**Public Service Competitions**: DND regularly posts open competitions for Disability Management Advisors at various salary levels (typically AS-02 to AS-04 range). These competitions are advertised on the Government of Canada Job Bank and the DND Civilian Careers website. You must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and meet the specific language and education requirements stated in the job posting.
**Lateral Moves**: If you are already employed in the Public Service in another department or agency, you can apply directly to DND postings or request a transfer through your current employer's HR office. Your existing public service status may streamline the hiring process.
**Student and Early Career Programs**: The Public Service Commission occasionally offers recruitment initiatives for recent graduates in Human Resources or related fields. Check the Government of Canada careers portal for youth employment programs and DND-specific graduate recruitment campaigns.
**Pools**: DND may maintain a staffing pool of pre-qualified candidates for this classification, allowing faster hiring when positions become available. Pools are advertised in advance and you can apply to remain on an active pool.
Part-Time Options
Part-time and flexible work arrangements for Disability Management Advisors vary depending on operational needs and individual circumstances. Many DND offices offer flexible start and end times, compressed work weeks, or job-sharing arrangements to support work-life balance.
Remote work options have expanded across the federal government. Depending on your location and specific role, you may be eligible to work from home for a portion of your week or on a full-time basis. However, some in-person meetings with employees requiring accommodation assessments or managers needing face-to-face consultation may still be necessary.
Part-time positions are occasionally posted for this classification, though they are less common than full-time roles. If you are interested in part-time work, discuss options with DND's HR team at the time of application or after hiring. The Government of Canada's flexible work policy supports employees seeking to transition to part-time schedules, subject to operational requirements and manager approval. Your employment benefits and pension contributions adjust proportionally based on your work schedule.
