The Government of Canada supports ongoing professional development through access to legal education programs, seminars, and conferences relevant to government legal practice. To reach this executive level, most candidates will have progressed through intermediate legal positions within the Public Service, developing expertise in government legal services. Training opportunities include executive leadership development programs offered by the Canada School of Public Service, specialized government law courses, and certifications through professional legal associations. You are expected to maintain your professional law society membership throughout your career and engage in continuing legal education as required by your provincial law society.

Entry Plans

Entry to this position typically occurs through federal government staffing processes open to Canadian citizens. Most candidates progress to the Director General level after serving in intermediate legal positions (such as Counsel or Senior Counsel) within DND or other government departments. The Public Service Commission conducts open competitions advertised on the Government of Canada jobs website (jobs.gc.ca). Candidates may enter the legal field in the Public Service through various pathways: the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) for law students, the Post-Secondary Recruitment Campaign targeting recent law graduates, or lateral transfers from other government departments or private practice. Once in the Public Service, advancement to director general positions requires demonstrated leadership capability, strategic thinking, and a strong track record managing complex legal files and teams. Internal development and acting appointments in higher-level positions are common steps in the progression to executive roles.

Part-Time Options

Director General positions are full-time, permanent roles that require your commitment to the department's operational and strategic needs. However, the Government of Canada is committed to workplace flexibility. Depending on operational requirements and departmental approval, flexible work arrangements such as telework and flexible hours may be negotiated. These arrangements are subject to the needs of the service and your ability to fulfill executive responsibilities, including attending meetings with senior leadership and managing your team effectively. As an executive leader, you may have limited access to traditional part-time work due to the continuous nature of legal advisory requirements and the need for consistent senior management presence. However, the Public Service does recognize work-life balance and professional well-being. Any flexible arrangements would be discussed and formalized through your employment contract and departmental policies.
