This is typically a senior-level role, so candidates usually come from within the Public Service with previous managerial experience, or from external sources with equivalent senior leadership background in education. Common pathways include: 1. Advancement from within DND: Those working as managers or senior instructors in DND's education branch may apply for competitions to advance to Director General level. 2. Public Service lateral moves: Managers from other federal departments with education, training, or program delivery experience may transition into this role. 3. External recruitment: DND may conduct open competitions to recruit experienced educational leaders from provincial education systems, universities, or other organizations. 4. Executive development programs: The Public Service offers leadership development initiatives that prepare mid-to-senior managers for executive positions like this one. All candidates must meet Public Service and security requirements, including a reliability clearance at minimum. Competition notices are posted on the Public Service Commission website (jobs.gc.ca) and DND's careers portal.

Part-Time Options

Director General positions are typically full-time, permanent roles due to the strategic leadership and operational oversight responsibilities required. However, the federal Public Service is increasingly accommodating flexible work arrangements where operationally feasible. Depending on organizational needs and individual circumstances, some flexibility may be available for telework or hybrid arrangements for administrative and strategic planning work. However, this role requires regular presence at DND facilities and with your teams to provide effective leadership and mentorship. Specific arrangements would be negotiated with your manager and DND Human Resources based on operational requirements and accessibility needs. Work-life balance initiatives and leave options available to all Public Service employees apply to this position, including flexible work schedules, telework options for certain duties, and standard vacation and sick leave entitlements.
