Many successful candidates have completed graduate-level studies, such as a Master's degree in Information Technology Management, Business Administration (MBA), or Public Administration. You should have formal training or certifications in information architecture, data governance, enterprise architecture frameworks (such as TOGAF), or information security (such as CISSP). Professional certifications from recognized bodies in IT management, project management (PMP), or information governance are valued. Continuous professional development is expected, including participation in senior leadership programs offered by the Canada School of Public Service, attendance at relevant conferences and seminars, and engagement with professional associations in information management and technology. DND supports ongoing learning and may provide access to specialized training in emerging technologies, strategic management, and government-specific policy areas.

Entry Plans

Most candidates enter this Director General position through competitive selection processes advertised on the Public Service Commission website and the DND Civilian Workforce careers portal. Typically, you must already be a member of the federal Public Service, often at the Executive (EX) level or Senior CS level, demonstrating progression through previous management and professional roles. Internal DND competitions may be conducted when vacancies arise, allowing current employees to apply. Lateral moves from other government departments are possible if you have equivalent experience and clearance. Some candidates progress through DND's leadership development and succession planning programs, which identify high-potential managers for advancement to senior executive positions. Previous experience as a Director or senior manager in information technology, data management, or related fields within the federal government is common. You may also enter through external executive recruitment if no suitable internal candidates are identified, though this is less common for this level. All candidates must obtain or maintain Top Secret security clearance and meet the eligibility requirements for federal employment.

Part-Time Options

Director General positions are typically full-time, permanent roles due to the strategic and ongoing nature of senior executive responsibilities. However, the federal Public Service, including DND, does support flexible work arrangements where operationally feasible. This may include hybrid work models that combine office time at DND headquarters with remote work, allowing for greater work-life balance while maintaining leadership presence and engagement with teams. The extent of flexibility available may depend on operational requirements, team needs, and agreement with your supervisor. Remote work options may be available for certain tasks and meetings, though regular in-person engagement is expected given the executive nature of the role and the need for direct collaboration with senior leadership and key stakeholders. Part-time work at the Director General level is uncommon but may be explored on a case-by-case basis through discussion with Human Resources. DND is committed to supporting employee wellness and work-life integration, and accommodations are considered based on individual circumstances and business requirements.
