Professional certifications from organizations such as the Canadian Public Relations Society or the Communications and Marketing Association of Canada are valued. Ongoing professional development is essential at this level. The Public Service offers executive coaching, leadership development programs through the Canada School of Public Service, and specialized training in crisis communications, digital media strategy, and government communications frameworks. Entry Plans

Entry to this Director General position typically occurs through competitive selection processes advertised on the Government of Canada Job Bank and internal Public Service staffing systems. Most candidates come from one of three pathways: advancement through progressive management roles within DND Communications, lateral moves from other federal departments with substantial communications or broadcasting experience, or external recruitment of proven senior communications leaders. Internal candidates usually progress through intermediate management levels (Manager, Director, Executive Director) within DND or other government communications branches. Lateral moves are common for individuals with senior management experience in federal communications, media relations, or public affairs. External candidates must demonstrate extensive leadership experience in broadcasting, media management, or strategic communications, typically at the director or vice-president level in media organizations or large public institutions. All candidates must undergo security screening and meet linguistic requirements (usually bilingual - English and French). The Public Service Commission oversees the competition process to ensure merit-based selection. Some specialized pools for executive positions may exist; staying connected with DND HR and monitoring Public Service Job Bank postings is recommended for interested candidates.

Part-Time Options

Director General positions are typically full-time, permanent roles due to the strategic leadership and decision-making responsibilities involved. However, the Government of Canada is increasingly flexible with how executives structure their work arrangements. Remote work options may be negotiated on a case-by-case basis, particularly for administrative and strategic planning work that does not require daily presence in the broadcasting facilities or senior leadership meetings. Given the need to manage crises and oversee broadcast operations, you would be expected to maintain availability during regular hours and potentially outside standard hours depending on operational needs. Flexible scheduling and compressed work weeks may be possible by mutual agreement with your deputy minister or senior leadership. Many DND managers have arranged flexible arrangements to balance personal needs with operational requirements. Discussion of work arrangements typically occurs during the hiring process or after appointment. The specific flexibility available depends on operational demands, team requirements, and organizational needs at the time of your appointment.
