Most candidates progress into this role after working in intermediate and senior sociology or social science positions within the public service, such as Senior Research Officer or Senior Policy Advisor roles. Lateral moves from other federal departments with comparable director-level positions are also common. Some candidates enter through executive recruitment processes when specialized expertise is required. The Public Service Commission manages competitions to ensure fair and merit-based selection. Demonstrated experience in team leadership, research management, policy development, and knowledge of DND operations or defence priorities strengthen your candidacy. Many successful candidates build their careers through multiple postings within DND or across the federal public service.

Part-Time Options

Director-level positions are typically full-time roles due to the strategic leadership responsibilities and decision-making authority required. However, DND offers flexible work arrangements that may include flexible hours, compressed work weeks, or hybrid work schedules combining office and remote work, depending on operational needs and management approval. Remote work options exist for certain aspects of the role, particularly research, analysis, and report writing activities. However, this position requires regular presence for meetings with senior leadership, team management, and cross-directorate collaboration. Telework arrangements are negotiated on a case-by-case basis and must align with DND security requirements and operational demands. Employees are encouraged to discuss flexible work options with their manager to find arrangements that support both personal needs and organizational requirements.
