Entry Plans
You can enter this career through several pathways within the federal Public Service. The most common route is through advertised competitions for Director-level positions within DND or other government departments. These competitions are open to Canadian citizens and may require a security clearance.
If you are already working in the Public Service at a lower classification level, you can apply for promotions or lateral moves to Director positions through internal competitions. Many candidates build their careers by progressing from Project Officer or Project Manager roles into senior portfolio management positions.
You may also enter as an external candidate if you have directly relevant private sector or international experience in portfolio management. The Public Service uses pools and recurring competitions to fill Director positions, so applicants often have multiple opportunities to apply. Student programs such as the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) or the Post-Secondary Recruitment Campaign (PSRC) can help you gain initial government experience and network within DND.
Part-Time Options
Director-level positions in portfolio management are typically full-time roles given the strategic responsibilities and decision-making authority required. However, the Government of Canada is committed to supporting work-life balance and flexibility where operationally feasible.
Many DND offices offer flexible work arrangements, including flexible hours, compressed work weeks, and telework options. The extent of these options depends on the specific position, operational requirements, and your manager's approval. As a Director, you may have greater autonomy in structuring your work schedule while ensuring coverage for critical meetings and decision-making processes.
Remote work options have expanded across the federal Public Service, and many portfolio management functions can be performed from home or alternate locations. However, regular in-person presence may be required for key governance meetings, stakeholder engagement, and team leadership activities. Discuss specific flexibility options during the recruitment process, as they vary by position and branch within DND.
