Entry Plans

Entry to this Director-level position typically occurs through advertised Government of Canada competitions. These competitions are open to Canadian citizens and may consider both internal (current Public Service employees) and external candidates. To be considered, you must meet the education and licensing requirements and demonstrate relevant experience in pharmacy management and health care leadership. Internal mobility is common for this role. Pharmacists working in lower classification levels within DND or other federal health organizations may apply when competitions are announced. Some candidates advance through progression in pharmacy positions before reaching the Director level. The federal government also maintains management candidate pools for strategic staffing of senior positions. If you are a recent pharmacy graduate, you may enter the Public Service at lower classification levels (such as Pharmacist positions) and work toward Director roles through career progression and demonstrated leadership capability. Some programs, such as the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) or Post-Secondary Recruitment Initiative (PSRI), provide pathways for students and recent graduates to begin their federal career.

Part-Time Options

Part-time arrangements for Director-level positions are limited due to the strategic leadership nature of the role and the requirement for continuity in managing pharmacy operations and staff. However, the federal Public Service is committed to workplace flexibility. Alternative work arrangements may be negotiated on a case-by-case basis, subject to operational requirements. These could include flexible daily schedules, compressed work weeks, or hybrid work options that combine on-site and remote work. Remote work options may be available for administrative and strategic planning duties, though the role requires regular presence at the health care facility to oversee operations and staff. To explore flexible work options, candidates are encouraged to discuss arrangements with the hiring manager during the recruitment process. Accommodations are made in accordance with Treasury Board policies and collective agreement provisions, balancing individual preferences with the operational needs of military health services.
