Entry Plans
Entry to this position typically occurs through advertised competitions on the Government of Canada Job Bank (jobs.gc.ca). Most candidates begin their federal careers at lower classification levels (such as Analyst or Senior Analyst roles) within Information Management or IT operations, then progress through promotion competitions as they gain experience and demonstrate leadership capability.
Lateral moves from other Government of Canada departments are common, particularly from departments with similar information management needs such as Treasury Board Secretariat, Library and Archives Canada, or other defence and security agencies. Some candidates transition from provincial or municipal government information management roles. Student programs and internships can provide an entry point for recent graduates, though progression to Director level requires several years of demonstrated performance and advancement through intermediate positions. Military personnel with relevant IT or administrative backgrounds may also transition to civilian roles at appropriate classification levels.
Part-Time Options
Director-level positions in Information Asset Management and Operations are typically full-time, permanent roles due to the strategic leadership and operational accountability required. However, the Government of Canada does offer flexible work arrangements for managers, including flexible hours and compressed work weeks when operationally feasible. Remote work options may be available for portions of the week, depending on organizational needs and management approval, though this role usually requires regular on-site presence for leadership meetings and team management.
The Department of National Defence is committed to supporting work-life balance for all employees. Managers in this role can discuss flexible arrangements with their supervisor and human resources advisor. Parental leave, compassionate leave, and other statutory leave provisions apply. Part-time or job-share arrangements at Director level are rare but may be considered on a case-by-case basis through Human Resources.
