Entry Plans

Most candidates enter this Director-level position through one or more of these pathways: direct external competition advertised through the Public Service Commission (PSC), lateral movement from related IM or IT management positions within DND or other federal departments, or promotion from senior IM roles within the department. To be considered competitive, you typically need 10 or more years of progressive experience in information management, business analysis, or IT management roles, with at least 3-5 years in a management or supervisory capacity. If you are already part of the federal Public Service in an IM role, you can express interest in internal competitions or speak with your HR advisor about career progression opportunities. External candidates should monitor the PSC Jobs website (jobs.gc.ca) and DND's careers site for open competitions. Lateral moves from other government departments are also possible if you have comparable experience.

Part-Time Options

This Director-level position is typically offered on a full-time permanent basis. However, the Government of Canada recognizes the importance of work-life balance, and alternate work arrangements may be negotiated depending on operational requirements and departmental policy. Remote work arrangements have become more common within the federal Public Service, and many IM roles include flexible options such as hybrid or telework schedules. As a Director, your ability to work remotely may be negotiated based on your team's operational needs and DND's current workplace policies. Part-time or job-sharing arrangements at the Director level are rare but not impossible; you should discuss your specific needs with the hiring manager and HR during the recruitment process. All work arrangements must align with Treasury Board policies and DND's operational requirements.
