Entry Plans

Entry into the Director - Graphic Design position in the federal Public Service typically occurs through advertised competitions open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and other eligible candidates. Candidates usually compete at the Director level with relevant experience in graphic design leadership, creative direction, and team management within communications or related sectors. Lateral moves into this role are possible for experienced employees already within the Public Service who have demonstrated design leadership capabilities and meet the qualifications. Some candidates transition from Senior Graphic Designer or similar positions within DND or other federal departments. The Government of Canada also offers student internship and early-career programs such as the Co-op Student Program and Post-Secondary Recruitment campaigns, which provide pathways to build experience toward director-level positions. Candidates are encouraged to monitor the Government of Canada Job Bank and DND's careers website for current opportunities and to review competition notices for specific eligibility requirements and application procedures.

Part-Time Options

Part-time arrangements may be available depending on operational and project requirements, though Director-level positions typically involve full-time commitment due to leadership and decision-making responsibilities. Flexible work arrangements, including flexible hours and telework options, are increasingly available across the federal Public Service and may be negotiated based on departmental needs and collective agreement provisions. Remote or hybrid work options have expanded within DND communications teams, allowing directors to work partially from home while maintaining sufficient in-person presence for team leadership, strategic meetings, and collaboration. The extent of flexibility depends on the specific work location, security requirements, and the nature of ongoing projects. Interested candidates should discuss work arrangement possibilities during the recruitment process and once hired. DND is committed to supporting work-life balance while maintaining operational effectiveness in defence communications.
