Professional certifications such as Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP), Certified Compensation Professional (CCP), or equivalents are highly valued and demonstrate expertise in the field.
The Government of Canada supports continuous professional development through access to Treasury Board learning programs, human resources conferences, and specialized compensation and benefits training. You will have opportunities to pursue advanced certifications, attend workshops on legislative changes affecting compensation and benefits, and participate in leadership development programs. Many directors also engage in peer learning networks with other federal departments and agencies to stay current with evolving compensation trends and best practices.
Entry Plans
Entry to this Director-level position typically occurs through several pathways in the federal Public Service. Most candidates advance to this level after working in progressively senior compensation and benefits roles, such as Compensation Advisor, Senior Advisor - Compensation and Benefits, or Manager - Compensation and Benefits. You may enter through open competitions posted on the Public Service Commission website or through talent management processes within the Department of National Defence.
Lateral moves from other human resources management roles, such as labour relations or employee relations management, are also possible with relevant compensation and benefits experience. Some candidates transition from positions in other federal departments where they have developed compensation expertise. The Public Service Commission occasionally conducts special recruitment initiatives and maintains inventory lists for senior human resources management positions, providing alternative pathways to appointment. Demonstrating progressive responsibility in compensation strategy, team leadership, and knowledge of public sector compensation frameworks strengthens your candidacy.
Part-Time Options
Director-level positions in Compensation and Benefits are typically full-time roles due to the strategic and management responsibilities involved. However, the Government of Canada remains committed to workplace flexibility and work-life balance. Depending on operational requirements and individual circumstances, flexible work arrangements such as modified work schedules or hybrid work (combining office and remote work) may be negotiated with your manager and the human resources branch.
Remote work options have expanded across the federal government, and depending on your duties and DND's requirements, some aspects of this role—such as policy development, data analysis, and internal consultations—can be performed from approved remote locations. Any flexible arrangements would be discussed during the recruitment process and would need to accommodate the demands of leading a compensation and benefits team and providing timely advice to senior management. The specific options available depend on operational needs, collective agreement provisions, and departmental policies in effect at the time of employment.
