Most commonly, candidates are recruited through open competitions advertised on the Government of Canada Job Bank (jobs.gc.ca). These competitions typically require demonstrating progressive management experience, proven leadership in commerce or retail operations, and a solid understanding of federal government operations. Candidates may also enter through lateral moves within DND or other federal departments if they have equivalent director-level experience in related fields such as general management, operations, or business administration. Some individuals advance to this role after serving in lower-level manager or supervisor positions within Defence commerce and retail services. Part-Time Options

Director-level positions are typically full-time, given the strategic leadership responsibilities and need for consistent presence in senior management roles. However, the Department of National Defence is committed to supporting work-life balance for all employees. Depending on operational requirements and individual circumstances, flexible work arrangements such as modified schedules or hybrid work models may be negotiated with management. Remote work options may be available for specific tasks or during certain operational periods, though the nature of this role—requiring on-site presence for leadership, staff supervision, and stakeholder engagement on military establishments—generally necessitates regular physical presence. Employees are encouraged to discuss flexible work options with their manager and Human Resources advisor. All arrangements must align with operational requirements and be approved by management. DND also provides benefits supporting work-life integration, including leave entitlements, employee assistance programs, and wellness initiatives available to all staff at the director level.
