Overview

As a Director - Carpentry, you lead carpentry operations and teams within Department of National Defence facilities and projects across Canada. You provide strategic direction, manage resources, and oversee the delivery of carpentry services that support military operations and infrastructure maintenance. This role combines hands-on carpentry expertise with management responsibility, requiring you to balance technical knowledge with personnel leadership and project oversight. Your responsibilities include supervising carpentry teams, planning and scheduling carpentry work, managing budgets and materials, ensuring quality standards are met, and maintaining safe work practices. You work with other trades, engineering teams, and facility managers to coordinate complex construction and renovation projects. You may also be involved in training apprentices, developing best practices, and implementing improvements to carpentry operations. You'll work in diverse environments including military bases, training facilities, and administrative buildings across Canada. The work is physically demanding and may involve exposure to weather, noise, and construction hazards. You may travel between sites and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Training

To qualify for this position, you typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, combined with extensive practical carpentry experience (usually 10+ years) and demonstrated supervisory or management experience. Many successful candidates hold a Red Seal Carpenter certification, which is recognized across Canada and demonstrates mastery of carpentry skills. Professional development opportunities within the Public Service include management and leadership training programs, project management certification, occupational health and safety courses, and apprenticeship instructor qualifications. The federal government supports ongoing professional development through tuition assistance programs and access to learning platforms. You may also pursue additional credentials in construction management or building information modelling (BIM) to advance your career.

Experienced Red Seal Carpenters working in the private sector can apply to these competitions. Some candidates progress into the Director level after working as lead carpenters or carpentry supervisors within DND. Part-Time Options

Part-time positions in this role are limited due to the management and supervisory nature of the work. However, the federal government is committed to flexible work arrangements where operationally feasible. Depending on project schedules and facility requirements, some flexibility in work hours may be negotiated with your manager. Remote work is generally not available for this role, as carpentry direction and team supervision require on-site presence at military facilities and construction sites. However, administrative tasks related to planning, scheduling, and reporting may be completed remotely in some cases. Candidates should be prepared for full-time, on-site work as the standard expectation for this position.
