Entry Plans

Entry into this Director-level position typically occurs through several pathways within the federal Public Service. Most commonly, you advance through competitive staffing processes after gaining experience in lower-level business management positions, such as Manager or Senior Advisor roles. These internal competitions are advertised on the Government of Canada's job portal (jobs.gc.ca) and are open to current public servants. You may also enter at this level through external recruitment if you bring significant private sector or other public sector management experience that is deemed equivalent. External candidates typically compete in open competitions alongside internal candidates. Some Director positions are filled through executive development programs or succession planning initiatives within DND. Lateral moves from other federal departments are possible if you already hold a Director-equivalent position and have transferable business management expertise. Student and early-career programs like the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) or the University Recruiting Program can provide entry points at junior levels, allowing you to build toward Director roles over time. Networking with DND recruitment teams and staying informed about staffing processes through departmental channels can help you identify opportunities aligned with your career goals.

Part-Time Options

Director-level positions in DND Business Management are typically full-time permanent roles given the strategic nature of the work and leadership responsibilities. However, the Government of Canada recognizes the importance of work-life balance and flexibility in the modern workplace. Where operationally feasible, flexible work arrangements such as compressed work weeks, flexible hours, or telework may be negotiated with your manager on a case-by-case basis. Remote work options have expanded across the federal public service, and many DND business management functions can be performed effectively from home for portions of the week, particularly for activities like strategic planning, analysis, and report writing. Day-to-day availability for meetings and team leadership remains important to your effectiveness in the role. Job sharing or part-time Director positions are uncommon due to the continuity and accountability required at this level, but you are encouraged to discuss your personal circumstances with recruiting managers during the hiring process. The federal public service also offers other supports such as parental leave, unpaid leave, and employee assistance programs to help you manage your work and personal responsibilities.
