Entry Plans

Entry to this Director-level position typically occurs through internal competition within the federal Public Service. Candidates usually have progressed through IT management roles such as Manager or Senior Advisor positions within DND or other government departments. The Public Service Commission (PSC) conducts competitive staffing processes that evaluate candidates on management experience, IT knowledge, leadership capability, and strategic thinking. Lateral moves from other federal departments with similar IT management experience are also possible. Some candidates may enter through external recruitment when specialized expertise is required, though this is less common for established Director positions. Advancement to this level generally requires 10-15 years of progressive experience in information technology and management roles. Interested candidates should monitor DND internal job postings and engage with their managers about career progression opportunities within the IT management stream.

Part-Time Options

Director-level positions are typically full-time appointments in the federal Public Service. However, flexible work arrangements, including hybrid and remote work options, have become more available across DND following recent policy updates on telework. The nature of strategic leadership responsibilities may require some on-site presence for collaboration, stakeholder engagement, and critical decision-making meetings. Specific flexibility options depend on operational requirements, departmental policies, and individual accommodation requests. Candidates should discuss flexible work possibilities during the recruitment and appointment process. Part-time Director roles are uncommon in the federal government due to the continuous nature of strategic oversight and team management responsibilities, but work-life balance initiatives and flexible scheduling within full-time employment are increasingly supported across the Public Service.
