Training

To qualify for a Director of Aviation position, you typically need a bachelor's degree in aviation, aerospace engineering, business administration, or a related field. Many candidates hold a master's degree in management, business administration, or a specialized aviation discipline. Professional certifications are valuable and may include pilot licenses, maintenance engineer licenses, or Transport Canada certifications depending on your specific pathway. You must demonstrate extensive experience in aviation operations, management, or technical roles—typically 10 or more years in progressively responsible positions. Once hired, you will have access to Government of Canada professional development programs, leadership training, and specialized aviation management courses. DND also supports ongoing education through tuition assistance programs and encourages participation in professional associations related to aviation and defence.

Entry Plans

Entry to a Director of Aviation role typically occurs through a competitive staffing process advertised on the Public Service Commission (PSC) website and the National Defence careers portal. Most candidates have progressed through the public service in aviation-related positions such as Aviation Officer, Senior Aviation Technician, or Manager of Aviation Operations. You may also enter through lateral appointment if you have equivalent experience and qualifications from outside government. Some candidates advance through the Canadian Armed Forces as military officers with aviation expertise before transitioning to civilian leadership roles. DND occasionally uses talent pools for senior management positions to expedite recruitment. Early-career professionals interested in this trajectory should explore entry-level aviation positions and consider formal management training programs offered within the department.

Part-Time Options

Director-level positions in aviation are typically full-time, permanent roles due to the strategic nature of the responsibilities and the need for consistent leadership and oversight. However, the Government of Canada does offer flexible work arrangements on a case-by-case basis, depending on operational requirements and departmental needs. Remote work options may be available for certain administrative or planning aspects of the role, though regular on-site presence is usually required for meetings, decision-making, and operational oversight. Candidates interested in flexible arrangements are encouraged to discuss possibilities during the recruitment process. Part-time or job-share options at the Director level are rare but may be considered in exceptional circumstances with departmental approval.
