As a Deckhand with the Department of National Defence, you will perform essential duties aboard naval vessels and support craft, contributing directly to Canada's maritime operations and national defence. You will work as part of a skilled deck crew, assisting with ship operations, maintenance, cargo handling, and safety procedures in a dynamic marine environment. Your work is critical to vessel readiness and the safety of crew members both aboard ship and during maritime operations.
Deckhand responsibilities include securing cargo, operating and maintaining deck equipment, performing routine maintenance tasks, standing watch on deck, assisting with mooring and anchoring operations, and supporting navigation activities. You will also participate in emergency drills, maintain shipboard cleanliness and safety standards, and respond to operational requirements that may include extended periods at sea. This is hands-on work that requires physical fitness, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in confined spaces and challenging weather conditions.
You will work within a structured military-civilian maritime environment where teamwork, reliability, and adherence to safety protocols are essential. Training
To qualify as a Deckhand, you must have a secondary school diploma or equivalent. Prior experience in maritime operations, commercial shipping, or military service is an asset but not required. The Government of Canada provides comprehensive on-the-job training specific to naval vessel operations, deck procedures, and safety requirements.
Once hired, you will receive formal training in maritime safety, vessel operations, emergency procedures, and deck-specific competencies. Depending on career development goals, you may pursue certifications through provincial marine authorities or international maritime organizations, such as qualifications leading to advancement to Bosun or other specialized deck positions. Professional development opportunities exist for those interested in further maritime qualifications or progression into supervisory roles within the naval service.
