Overview

Data Administrators are responsible for managing and maintaining the databases and data systems that support Department of National Defence operations and decision-making. You will work with large volumes of sensitive information, ensuring data is secure, accurate, and accessible to authorized users across the organization. As a Data Administrator, you will design database structures, monitor system performance, troubleshoot issues, and implement security protocols to protect Canada's defence information. Your day-to-day responsibilities include installing and configuring database management systems, backing up and recovering data, managing user access and permissions, and documenting database procedures and standards. You will collaborate with IT teams, analysts, and business stakeholders to understand data requirements and optimize database performance. This role requires strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work with complex technical systems in a secure, classified environment. Data Administrators work in modern office environments, often located at DND facilities across Canada. You may work standard business hours, though on-call support for critical systems may be required. The role offers opportunities to work on systems that directly support Canada's defence capabilities and national security.

Entry into this position typically requires a diploma or degree in computer science, information technology, database management, or a related field. Some candidates may qualify through equivalent work experience in database administration or IT system management. Strong foundational knowledge of SQL, database design principles, and operating systems is essential. The Government of Canada provides professional development opportunities including training in specific database platforms (such as Oracle, SQL Server, or PostgreSQL), security protocols, and DND-specific systems. Many Data Administrators pursue industry certifications such as Certified Associate Database Administrator (CADB), Oracle Certified Associate (OCA), or Microsoft Certified: Data Administrator credentials. Continuing education is encouraged and supported to keep your skills current with evolving database technologies and security requirements.

Entry Plans

Most Data Administrator positions in the DND are filled through competitive public service staffing processes. Entry is typically at the IT-02 or IT-03 level, depending on education and experience. You can apply when competitions are advertised on the Government of Canada Job Bank (jobs.gc.ca) and internal DND recruitment channels. The federal Public Service may also offer pathways through student exchange programs, term employment, or casual positions that can lead to permanent roles. Priority hiring may apply to veterans and members of designated equity groups. Lateral moves from other IT positions within the federal government are also possible for those with relevant database experience. Once hired, you will receive training specific to DND systems, security clearance requirements, and department-specific database architectures to ensure you can effectively support defence operations.

Part-Time Options

Data Administrator positions are typically offered as full-time permanent roles. However, the federal Public Service does offer flexible work arrangements in many cases, including the potential for compressed work weeks or flextime within operational requirements. Remote work options may be available for certain tasks such as documentation, training, or system monitoring, though some duties require on-site presence for physical system maintenance and security protocols. Specific flexibility arrangements depend on operational needs, security classifications, and your manager's approval. Part-time or job-sharing positions are less common in this role due to the need for continuity in database management and system availability. When applying, discuss flexible work options with the hiring manager, as DND is committed to supporting work-life balance while maintaining critical system support for national defence.
