You will create engaging lesson plans, demonstrate cooking techniques, and evaluate student performance in both classroom and practical kitchen environments. Your day-to-day responsibilities include preparing instructional materials, conducting hands-on cooking demonstrations, mentoring students through skill development, assessing competency in food preparation standards, and staying current with culinary best practices and food safety regulations. You will work collaboratively with other instructors, kitchen operations staff, and training coordinators to support the professional development of food service personnel at military bases and training facilities across Canada. You will work in modern training kitchens and classroom facilities, primarily during standard business hours, though some evening or weekend instruction may be required depending on operational needs. Training

To qualify for a Cooking Instructor position, you typically need a high school diploma or equivalent and several years of professional cooking experience in a food service environment. Many successful candidates hold a professional cooking certification or culinary diploma from a recognized institution, such as a provincial culinary school or apprenticeship program. Essential certifications include Food Safety and Sanitation Certification (Level 3 or equivalent) and a current Food Handler Certificate. Depending on the specific posting, additional qualifications may include Red Seal Certification as a Cook, Advanced Food Safety Management, or specialized training in military food service standards. Once hired, you will have access to professional development opportunities including instructional skills training, curriculum development workshops, and advanced culinary certifications. The Department supports ongoing learning through tuition assistance programs and opportunities to attend industry conferences and training events that keep your knowledge current with evolving food service practices and Defence standards.

Entry Plans

Entry into a Cooking Instructor position with the Department of National Defence typically occurs through open competitions posted on the Government of Canada's Job Bank and the DND Civilian Workforce careers website. Competitions are usually advertised at the CR-3 or CR-4 classification level, depending on experience and qualifications. You may also enter this career through lateral moves if you are already a member of the Public Service in a related position, such as a food service supervisor or military cook. Some opportunities arise through targeted recruitment for specific military training centres or bases. The Department occasionally participates in student work-integrated learning programs for culinary students, which can lead to permanent positions upon graduation. To apply, you will need to submit a resume detailing your culinary experience, relevant certifications, and any teaching or mentoring background. A cover letter explaining your interest in training and development within a military context is also important. Selected candidates typically participate in an interview process that assesses both technical culinary knowledge and instructional capability.

Part-Time Options

Part-time positions as a Cooking Instructor are available in some locations, particularly at training centres with flexible scheduling needs. Part-time instructors typically work on a call-in or fixed part-time basis, delivering specific courses or supplementing full-time staff during peak training periods. Remote work is limited in this role due to the hands-on, practical nature of culinary instruction. However, some components of curriculum development, lesson planning, and online assessment may be performed remotely. The majority of your time will be spent in training kitchen facilities where you directly supervise students in food preparation activities. Flexible work arrangements may be negotiated on a case-by-case basis depending on operational requirements and the specific needs of your training centre. Some positions may offer flexible start times or compressed work weeks. Interested candidates should discuss scheduling options with the hiring manager during the recruitment process, as availability varies by location and training demands.
