Once hired, you will receive training specific to DND's compensation systems, Treasury Board policies, collective agreement provisions, and federal compensation legislation. Entry Plans
Entry into the Compensation Advisor role is typically through federal public service competitions advertised on the Government of Canada Jobs website (jobs.gc.ca). These competitions are open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents. You may enter at various classification levels depending on your education and experience.
The federal government also offers several pathways to entry: the Post-Secondary Recruitment Initiative (PSRI) targets recent graduates, while the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) and the Co-op Student Program provide opportunities for students currently enrolled in post-secondary education. Individuals already working in the federal public service may pursue lateral moves into compensation roles through internal competitions or mobility programs.
You may also enter through feeder pools or inventory lists if the department has established competition results. Priority hiring may be available for veterans, Indigenous peoples, members of visible minorities, and persons with disabilities, in accordance with Treasury Board equity policies.
Part-Time Options
Compensation Advisor positions typically offer flexible work arrangements to support work-life balance. Many DND civilian employees have access to part-time work options, job sharing, and flexible hours, subject to operational requirements and management approval. Remote work has become increasingly available since the federal government's return-to-work policies were implemented, with many Compensation Advisors working on a hybrid basis combining office and home-based work.
The nature of compensation advisory work—involving data analysis, policy development, and consultations—generally supports flexible arrangements. However, some in-person presence may be required for training, meetings with stakeholders, and collaboration with other HR and Finance teams. Specific flexibility options depend on the position, classification level, and the immediate supervisor's management approach. Upon hiring, you would discuss your preferred work arrangement with your manager within the parameters set by DND's workplace flexibility policies.
