Civil Engineering Draftspersons create technical drawings and plans that form the foundation of construction and infrastructure projects across the Department of National Defence. Working closely with professional engineers and architects, you will transform design concepts into precise, detailed drawings using computer-aided design (CAD) software and traditional drafting techniques. Your work ensures that project specifications are clearly communicated to construction teams and contractors.
Your daily responsibilities include preparing construction drawings, site plans, and technical specifications; updating and revising designs based on engineer feedback; maintaining drawing libraries and project documentation; and ensuring all plans meet relevant codes, standards, and DND requirements. You may work on diverse projects ranging from facility maintenance and upgrades to new infrastructure developments at military bases and defence installations across Canada.
You will work in a professional office environment, typically at a DND facility or regional engineering office. This role offers the opportunity to contribute directly to the operational readiness of Canadian Armed Forces installations while developing expertise in civil engineering design and documentation.
Key Responsibilities
Perform civil engineering analysis, design, and review, Prepare technical specifications and engineering documents, Conduct inspections, assessments, and quality reviews, Ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards
Required Skills
Technical analysis, Design and drafting tools (CAD), Project management, Regulatory knowledge, Problem-solving, Technical proficiency, Attention to detail, Collaboration, Continuous learning
Typical Education
Post-secondary education or equivalent experience relevant to the position
Training
Most positions require a diploma or certificate in Civil Engineering Technology, Architectural Technology, or a related drafting program from an accredited college or technical institute. Some candidates enter with a high school diploma plus extensive on-the-job training. Knowledge of industry-standard CAD software (AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar) is essential, and familiarity with Building Information Modeling (BIM) is increasingly valued. You should understand construction terminology, building codes, and engineering drawing standards (CSA standards and DND specifications).
Once hired, the Government of Canada provides training opportunities to support your professional development, including formal instruction in DND-specific software, advanced CAD techniques, and project management fundamentals. Many Civil Engineering Draftspersons pursue certification through professional technical associations such as Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) or pursue additional credentials in specialized areas like BIM coordination. Continuing education supports advancement to senior technical or supervisory positions.
Entry Plans
The Government of Canada recruits Civil Engineering Draftspersons through competitive processes managed by the Public Service Commission. Entry typically occurs through one of several pathways: open competitions advertised on the Government of Canada Job Bank, which are open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents; departmental staffing pools where DND identifies qualified candidates for placement; or student recruitment programs such as the Post-Secondary Recruitment Campaign, which targets recent graduates. Some candidates enter through lateral transfers from other government departments or the Canadian Armed Forces. Appointments are made at the appropriate classification level (typically PE-02 or PE-03) based on qualifications and experience. All candidates must meet Government of Canada security requirements and be eligible to obtain a security clearance.
Part-Time Options
Part-time and flexible work arrangements are available for Civil Engineering Draftspersons, depending on operational requirements and the specific work location. Many regional engineering offices and facilities management teams offer flexibility in scheduling to support work-life balance. Remote work options have expanded and may be available for certain drafting and documentation tasks, particularly when CAD work does not require immediate coordination with on-site personnel or site inspections. Specific arrangements are determined by the hiring manager and the needs of the project or facility. Employees are encouraged to discuss flexible work options during the recruitment process or after taking the position, as accommodation is considered on a case-by-case basis in compliance with Treasury Board policies.
