As a Cargo Handler in Air Transport, you play a critical role in the safe and efficient movement of military and civilian cargo through Canadian airfields. You are responsible for loading, unloading, and securing cargo on aircraft, using specialized equipment and following strict safety protocols. Your work ensures that supplies, equipment, and materials reach their destinations on time and in perfect condition, supporting DND operations across Canada and around the world.

Cargo Handlers work as part of a dedicated team at air transport squadrons and logistics hubs across Canada. You may be called upon to work shift work, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends, depending on flight schedules and operational requirements. Training
Most candidates should have a high school diploma or equivalent (Grade 12). While formal education beyond secondary school is not required, courses in mathematics, physics, or material handling can be advantageous.
Once hired, you will receive comprehensive on-the-job training covering cargo handling procedures, aircraft safety protocols, hazardous materials regulations, and operation of specialized equipment such as cargo loaders and forklifts. You will learn to read load plans, calculate weight and balance, and follow Transport Canada and military regulations.
Certifications you may obtain or be required to hold include a valid driver's license, forklift operator certification, hazardous materials handling certification (if applicable), and standard first aid. DND provides tuition support and encourages participation in professional development programs. As you progress, you may pursue training in supervision, advanced logistics, or specialized cargo handling techniques.
Entry Plans
The primary way to enter this career is through Public Service staffing competitions advertised on the Government of Canada Job Bank and the DND Civilian Careers website. Competitions are typically open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents. You may apply as an external candidate (no prior Public Service experience required) or as an internal candidate if you currently work for the federal government.
