Overview

Cable Television Service Technicians install, maintain, and repair cable television systems and related telecommunications equipment for the Department of National Defence. They work with various types of cable, connectors, and broadcasting equipment to ensure reliable communication and entertainment services across military installations and facilities. This is a hands-on trade position that combines technical knowledge with practical problem-solving skills. The role involves troubleshooting cable systems, identifying faults in transmission lines, replacing damaged components, and performing preventive maintenance on broadcasting and telecommunications infrastructure. Technicians work both indoors and outdoors, often at heights or in confined spaces, installing new cable runs, splicing cables, and testing system performance. They follow established safety procedures and technical specifications to ensure all work meets Canadian Standards and Department requirements. Cable Television Service Technicians work in a diverse environment that includes military bases, communication centres, and remote locations. This role offers the opportunity to contribute directly to operational communications capabilities while developing expertise in an essential trade. You'll work as part of a technical team, collaborating with other trades and professionals to support Defence infrastructure.

Some provinces offer vocational certificates in cable installation and service. Professional development opportunities include certification through industry bodies such as the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) or the Canadian Association of Telecom Service Installers (CATSI). The Department supports training in equipment-specific systems, safety protocols, and advanced technical skills. Entry Plans

Most Cable Television Service Technicians join the DND civilian workforce through open competitions announced on the Government of Canada Job Bank and the DND Civilian Careers website. Competitions typically require demonstrated trade experience or successful completion of a recognized apprenticeship program. You may enter through several pathways: direct application to advertised positions at specific bases or regional centres, participation in a staffing pool for multiple locations, or lateral transfer if you're already a federal public servant in a related trade. Some individuals gain initial experience through student work programs or casual employment before transitioning to permanent positions. The Department occasionally recruits apprentices and provides training for candidates without prior trade certification. All candidates must obtain security clearance and pass a medical examination.

Part-Time Options

Part-time opportunities for Cable Television Service Technicians are limited but may be available depending on operational needs at specific DND locations. Full-time permanent positions are the standard for this trade role, typically involving a 37.5-hour work week. Flexible work arrangements such as compressed work weeks or shift work may be available to accommodate operational requirements, particularly if your location requires 24/7 system monitoring or emergency maintenance support. Remote work is not typical for this position due to the hands-on, on-site nature of cable installation and maintenance work. Shift work, including evenings and weekends, may be required for system maintenance or emergency repairs. Discuss specific work arrangement options during the recruitment process with your hiring manager, as availability varies by location and operational priorities.
