Entry Plans

Entry into a Business Development Officer role with DND typically occurs through several pathways: Public Service Recruitment: DND regularly posts Business Development Officer positions through the Government of Canada jobs website (Canada.ca/careers). Candidates compete based on their education, relevant work experience, and demonstrated competencies in business analysis and relationship management. Talent Pools: The Public Service Commission maintains staffing pools for business and commerce roles. If you are registered in an active pool, you may be offered positions without competing in a new competition. Student and Early Career Programs: The Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) and the Accelerated Executive Development Program (AEDP) provide pathways for students and recent graduates to gain experience within DND and potentially move into permanent roles. Lateral Moves: Public servants working in related fields such as procurement, accounts management, or business analysis may transition into Business Development Officer positions through internal competitions or appointment mechanisms. Second Language Requirements: Depending on the position's location and duties, bilingual capability (English and French) may be required or an asset.

Part-Time Options

Business Development Officer positions at DND are typically full-time permanent roles; however, flexible work arrangements may be available depending on operational requirements and management approval. Remote work options have expanded within the federal government. Many business development activities—such as market research, proposal writing, client communications, and internal meetings—can be conducted from home or alternative work locations. However, some aspects of the role, particularly client meetings and relationship building, may require in-person presence. Flexible scheduling is sometimes possible to accommodate work-life balance, though core business hours may be required for collaboration with colleagues and clients across time zones. Part-time or job-shared Business Development Officer positions are less common but may be available in select circumstances. Interested candidates should discuss flexible work options during the recruitment process or with their manager once hired, as approval depends on operational needs and departmental policy.
