Entry Plans

Entry into this career with the Government of Canada typically occurs through federal public service competitions advertised on the Jobs.gc.ca website. These competitions are open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents who meet the educational and experience requirements. Candidates are evaluated based on their technical broadcasting skills, communication abilities, and knowledge of DND operations. Some positions may be filled through internal staffing processes if you are already a Government of Canada employee. The Public Service Commission also maintains recruitment pools for communications roles that may include announcer positions. Students and recent graduates may find opportunities through the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) or the Co-op Student Program, which provide pathways to permanent employment. Lateral moves from related communications or media roles within the federal public service are also common, particularly for candidates with broadcast or journalism experience in other government departments.

Part-Time Options

Part-time and flexible work arrangements for Announcers in DND are available depending on operational needs and the specific position. Many broadcast and communications roles can accommodate flexible scheduling, particularly for positions that support multiple shift rotations or production schedules. Remote work options may be available for certain content preparation and administrative duties, though on-site presence is typically required for actual broadcast recording and studio work. The feasibility of part-time or flexible arrangements should be discussed during the recruitment and interview process, as requirements vary based on the broadcast schedule and communications priorities of the Department. DND is committed to supporting work-life balance for its civilian employees and will work with successful candidates to explore reasonable accommodations where operationally feasible.
