Overview

As an Algorithm Developer with the Department of National Defence, you will design, develop, and optimize algorithms that power artificial intelligence systems supporting defence and security operations. You will work on complex computational problems, translating research concepts into practical, scalable solutions that enhance decision-making and operational effectiveness across the organization. Your work directly contributes to Canada's technological edge in defence innovation. In this role, you will collaborate with data scientists, software engineers, and subject matter experts to develop algorithms for machine learning models, data analysis, and pattern recognition. You will be responsible for algorithm design, prototype development, performance testing, and documentation. Your day-to-day work includes writing and reviewing code, conducting experimental validation, troubleshooting technical issues, and presenting findings to both technical and non-technical audiences. You will work in a dynamic research and development environment within DND's AI initiatives. This may include hybrid arrangements combining office-based collaboration with remote work. You will have access to advanced computing infrastructure and the opportunity to work on projects with real-world impact to national defence.

Training

You will typically hold a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related engineering discipline. A master's degree in Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or Computer Science is highly valued. Some positions may accept equivalent professional experience demonstrating strong algorithmic development expertise. Essential technical skills include proficiency in programming languages such as Python, C++, Java, or similar; experience with machine learning frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch); understanding of data structures and algorithms; and familiarity with version control systems. Knowledge of linear algebra, statistics, and numerical methods is important. The Government of Canada and DND support ongoing professional development through access to training programs, conference attendance, and certifications relevant to AI and software development. You may pursue certifications such as those offered by professional organizations in software engineering or data science. Internal DND training on defence systems, security protocols, and operational context is provided to all new employees.
