A strong understanding of artificial intelligence concepts, machine learning principles, and AI ethics is essential. Professional certifications in AI governance, data management, or quality assurance are advantageous. DND and the Public Service provide ongoing professional development opportunities, including access to AI literacy programs, governance workshops, and advanced technical training. Continuing education in areas such as AI risk assessment, compliance frameworks, and emerging AI technologies is strongly encouraged and often supported through departmental learning budgets.

Entry Plans

Entry into this career typically occurs through one of several pathways within the federal Public Service. The most direct route is through a public service staffing competition advertised on the Government of Canada's Job Bank and DND's careers portal. These competitions are open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents and may be open to the public or targeted to current Public Service employees. If you are already working in the federal Public Service, you may enter through an internal bridging or lateral move competition, particularly if you have relevant experience in IT, project management, or policy analysis. Some candidates transition into this role from positions in data management, software quality assurance, or IT governance roles. DND occasionally recruits talented professionals through the Canadian Armed Forces Civilian Entry Program or graduate recruitment initiatives. If you are a recent graduate with relevant education in computer science or information technology, you may qualify for graduate recruitment streams. Students can also gain valuable experience through internship programs or the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) before pursuing permanent positions. To stay informed about opportunities, register on the Government of Canada Job Bank, follow DND's careers website, and consider joining relevant professional networks in the AI and governance communities.

Part-Time Options

Part-time and flexible work arrangements are available for this position, subject to operational requirements and departmental policy. Many AI Use Case Registrar positions in the federal government support flexible scheduling, allowing you to structure your work week in a way that balances departmental needs with personal circumstances. Remote and hybrid work options are typical for this role. Much of the work—such as registry management, documentation review, and stakeholder coordination—can be performed effectively outside a traditional office setting. Many employees work from a DND office location one to three days per week, with the remainder of their time available for remote work from home or other locations. Flexible start and end times are often negotiable within your team, and some positions offer compressed work weeks. If you have caregiving responsibilities or other personal needs, you can discuss accommodation options with your manager. These arrangements are formalized through individual agreements and are subject to the needs of the program and compliance with Treasury Board guidelines on flexible work in the federal Public Service. During critical periods—such as major policy updates or urgent compliance reviews—additional hours may be required, but DND strives to maintain work-life balance across the organization.
