Entry Plans
There are several pathways to become an Advisor in Diversity, Inclusion and Employment Equity Policy with DND. The primary entry method is through a Public Service Commission (PSC) competition, where you apply directly to a posted position. These competitions are open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents and are advertised on the Government of Canada Job Bank and DND's careers website.
If you are already a federal public servant, you may also enter this career through internal appointment processes or by applying to priority pools established by DND. Lateral moves from related human resources, policy, or labour relations roles are common pathways. Some positions may be filled through staffing pools created to build a talent pipeline for diversity and inclusion roles across the Department.
Student and early-career programs can also provide entry into this field. The Public Service Youth International Mobility Program and other federal student internship programs occasionally offer placements in human resources and policy roles. Completing these programs may lead to bridging into a permanent position. Your experience, education, and the specific requirements of the available competition will determine which pathway is most suitable for you.
Part-Time Options
This role typically offers flexible work arrangements to support work-life balance. Many positions are available on a full-time basis, though part-time and job-share options may be available depending on operational needs and departmental approval. The nature of policy and advisory work often allows for flexible scheduling, as long as core hours and meeting commitments are met.
Remote and hybrid work arrangements have become more common for this type of position. Depending on your manager's approval and operational requirements, you may have the opportunity to work from home for part or all of your work week. This flexibility is particularly useful for roles focused on policy research, document drafting, and data analysis, which can often be completed outside a traditional office setting. However, some in-person time may be required for meetings, consultations, and collaboration with colleagues.
The Department of National Defence follows Treasury Board policies on flexible work and telework. Specific arrangements will depend on your position, location, and business needs. We encourage you to discuss flexible work options during the hiring process or with your manager once hired. Part-time positions may have reduced benefits and pension contributions, so you should review the specific terms and conditions of any position before accepting.
