Overview

As an Accountant in the Department of National Defence, you will play a critical role in managing the financial operations that support Canada's defence and security mission. You will prepare, analyze, and verify financial records and statements, ensuring accuracy and compliance with Treasury Board policies, the Financial Administration Act, and departmental regulations. Your work directly contributes to the transparency and accountability of public funds entrusted to DND. Your responsibilities will include recording financial transactions, reconciling accounts, preparing financial reports, conducting variance analysis, and supporting internal and external audits. You may also assist in budget development, cost analysis, and the implementation of financial systems and controls. Training

To qualify as an Accountant with DND, you must hold a university degree in accounting, finance, commerce, or a related field from a recognized institution. Many successful candidates have completed courses in financial accounting, management accounting, and auditing as part of their studies. While not always required for entry-level positions, professional accounting certification is highly valued and may be required for advancement. Many employees pursue the CPA (Chartered Professional Accountant) designation while working with DND, and the department supports professional development through study leave and examination fee reimbursement. You may also be required or encouraged to complete Treasury Board's Introduction to Financial Management course and other government-specific training in financial policies and systems. Continuing professional development is encouraged throughout your career, including training on government accounting software, advanced financial analysis, and emerging government finance practices.
